I think I found a new obsession: NUDIBRANCHS!

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/06/nudibranchs/doubilet-photography

They are some of the most beautiful (and adorable) creatures I have ever seen! :D

Looks like my next goal in life is to become a photographer for National Geographic...
29th-Apr-2008 11:17 pm - LIFE.
What I'm grateful for right now:

-good friends :)
-my parents
-insulating foam sealant (for sculpting Moai, not insulating my home)
-making art that isn't related to my thesis (whoops)
-Our apartment skylight
-mathematics! (no, I'm not kidding)
-my black Jewish "Grandmother" who invited me to her Seder dinner!
-lentils, kale, strawberries, and coffee
-trees
-Alex Grey (who I met recently -and he gave me good advice and a big hug!)
-recording the sounds of Baltimore
-books
-my fluffy blue robe
-glycerine
-finally appreciating the insanity of my graduate program director
-watching "Avatar: The Last Airbender" with Aaron
-traveling on my own in the city

I have been really inspired as of late -now only if I could harness all that creative energy to finish this MA program...
Mmmm... I just had an extremely tasty chicken souvlaki on pita! Even though I am surrounded by all the gryo and souvlaki I could ever want, it makes me miss the döner kebap house across the street from my ever so brief home in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany!

I have been incredibly content lately. I'm doing what I love, the weather is beautiful, and the people in my life are wonderful! Nothing seems to bug me anymore (than the occasional cranky person and of course, chronic pain). This past month has been an immense confidence booster, and I really feel like I am capable of doing anything! This year has been going swimmingly: the mosaic project has brought my parents and I closer, I traveled to the Caribbean, I have met (and even befriended) some of the most influential artists in my life, I'm having a comic published, I'm rekindling old friendships, I'm enjoying living with my best friend in the coolest apartment ever more and more... the list goes on. With this, I am revealing the URL to my new blog: http://illicitharmony.blogspot.com/ Nothing is there quite yet, but I will have something posted tonight. This will be a place for more insightful content regarding my inspirations, research, and hopefully artwork. I will still be using lj for little updates here and there.

I am an enlightened spirit. Life is good. :)

In other news: Baltimore '68 got some national press!

http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0424/p20s01-ussc.html?page=1

This one really gets to the heart of our mosaic project, despite some factual errors.

Some powerful quotes from my workshop participants:
"I went in the door realizing I didn't know the whole story," says Terry White, who drew on his tile a scene of his Baltimore neighborhood under martial law. "I brought in one story from one guy, and I left with the heartfelt stories of 12 people."

"As I looked at the riots while they happened in my neighborhood," says Birt, "I knew the stores of white merchants were burned. But to be frank, after King was killed, I didn't give a damn. That was my attitude. But when you hear the story of Christina's mother getting burned[sic] out of her home – somebody's family – come on. And she was my neighbor, too, I realized."

So, I get an email from Ross inviting a few friends who have been involved in UMBC's Kinetic Sculpture Club to the KINETIC GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP in California at the end of May. Since I don't have classes during that time, and I'm almost done my Americorps hours, and I've been pretty good at managing my measly stipend, I got excited about the possibility of a cross-country road trip. More than anything, I really want to drive through the badlands of Arizona. I <3 colorful rock formations.

The following conversation ensued:

me: Are you serious about the CA race???
Ross: Well, I am always serious.
me: I can't take that comment seriously.
Ross: Well, then you are sillly.
me: Now seriously, you are willing to skip finals and finance a road trip to California from Maryland with the sculpture?
...because that's awesome
...maybe not wise, but awesome
Ross: I am awesome.
me: How long are you expecting this trip to be? Will you be taking side trips too?
Ross: A week there, a week back. Ish.
me: I would totally be into that... but only if someone else would be willing to go too, because I'm sure you would leave me on the side of the road somewhere in Texas on the way there.
Ross: Yes. I think we would kill each other.

I am highly amused... such a wonderful level of understanding between the two of us!

13th-Feb-2008 11:39 am - INTENSE.

I would like to see proper discussion happen here, and not just "AWESOME" or "WTF ARE THEY DOING?". I'm not posting this to romanticize their efforts, I'm posting this because I want people to THINK about their efforts and come to their own conclusions (though I'm not going to deny that the way this video is edited glorifies the event). I think I will debut my other blog at the end of the week so that we can have a constructive dialogue, because sometimes I think the culture of livejournal may prevent that.

Also, with this upcoming election, do you honestly feel like we're going into an era of positive change, or are we allowing the feeling of hope to overwhelm and disillusion us?

I only ask this because the events of 1968 really influence my perspective, and if you ask the focus group that I'm working with the same question: they will let you know of the devastation a taste of hope will lead to when it is taken away.

“Great dangers always accompany great opportunities. The possibility of destruction is always implicit in the act of creation. Thus the greatest enemy of individual freedom is the individual himself.” – Saul Alinsky, Rules for Radicals
NO EDUCATION, NO LIFE! Congrats to one of my MICA classmate's organizations, The Baltimore Algebra Project, for what I consider a huge success!

I think it's almost time to tell all of you what I've been up to these days. I was in denial before which is why I've been silent, but I am finally beginning to believe what I'm doing is important.

23rd-Oct-2007 01:13 pm - The need for a change.
FYI

I will be retiring this journal's name within a week, and all the previous entries with it. I will not be deleting them, but they will be set to private. If there was an entry in the past that concerned you or if by any chance you return to it, let me know in a comment on this entry so I can keep it as friends only.

This is not a "running away from my past" tactic. The past is important, and I appreciate my history no matter how painful some things are, because without it there would be no growth, no lessons learned, and no lessons to continue learning from. Experiences are what shape WHO WE ARE. There is also a need for the acceptance of change, and with that a time to let go and continue down a different path in life's journey.

I want this journal to transform into something completely different: into a place to share inspiration, a place for conversation, a place of expression in many forms and senses. I am going through a metamorphosis not only as an artist, but as a compassionate human being. I want to share this journey with you, but I have forgotten this journal, and in a sense have forgotten the community of friends attached to it.

So, I'm starting anew, and hopefully with change will come new perspective, and frequent entries.
7th-Oct-2007 12:38 pm - Life.
My life right now is awesome, for lack of a better word. Awesome = both challenging and rewarding. It has been busy though, and I hope one day to find the time to make a detailed public entry about it (I can't make promises like I have though). In a nutshell, I am surrounded by good friends, good people, fun times, and living in the heart of Baltimore City has been fascinating.

If every thing works out and my immensely long string of good luck continues, I may be organizing the biggest and most important community arts project in the history of Baltimore. For the time being, inquire me in person if you want to know more. I'm so excited!

A HUGE THANKS to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, btw! :D Much <3!
26th-Aug-2007 01:29 pm(no subject)
My Uncle Kenny passed away at 2am on August 25th. It's going to be a difficult week ahead. :(

I'm not really sure what to think of this summer. It has been quite a mix of emotions. There's been a lot of loss and grief within both family and groups of friends... but otherwise I've been pretty content. I'm satisfied with where I am in life, or at least excited about what the future holds.

Next time, I will have a true summer entry for all of you. If I fail to deliver this, please yell at me.
